      <image:title>About Dr. Emery - Alexandra Emery, Ph.D. she/her/hers</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a licensed psychologist with generalist training across a wide range of presenting concerns. In private practice, I specialize in helping adults navigate anxiety as it shows up in different areas of life. This can include personal growth, negative self-talk, perfectionism, difficult relationships, and parenting-related concerns. In clinical terms, my work often addresses anxiety, depression, burnout, self-esteem, grief, and identity issues. Anxiety is a common thread across much of the work I do. It can appear as chronic overthinking, emotional exhaustion, relationship stress, self-criticism, or the constant pressure to “hold it all together.” I work with clients to build sustainable change through understanding the underlying patterns driving anxiety, and to develop greater self-compassion, emotional regulation, and self-trust. I believe the most meaningful and effective therapy is grounded in a strong therapeutic relationship. In our work together, I prioritize creating a thoughtful, collaborative space that is responsive to your unique needs, values, and life circumstances. Therapy is not about fixing what is broken, but about developing insight, flexibility, and a more supportive relationship with yourself. Born and raised in Olympia, Washington, I’ve returned to my roots for private practice. You’ll see in my education and training below that I took a ten-year detour in the Midwest before finding my way back home. PsychologyToday — GoodTherapy — LinkedIn</image:caption>

Though not initially intended to be a compliment, Tacoma’s residents have reclaimed the nickname Grit City to represent a collective identity of bravery, strength, and perseverance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Grit City - Grit in Psychology</image:title>
<image:caption>In my doctoral program, I developed a specialty in positive psychology through both clinical training and research. A tenant of *positive psychology is grit, or the resilience/courage/strength to move forward despite innumerable obstacles. Like life’s many challenges, to achieve personal growth in therapy, it often takes bravery, courage, resilience, and a little bit of grit. *Positive psychology can sometimes get a bad reputation for pushing optimism, unrealistic and inauthentic happiness, sunshine, rainbows, you get it. While these may be the more fun aspects of life, they certainly don’t capture the whole story, as suffering undeniably exists. In my practice, I use positive psychology to capitalize on what’s going well, while also acknowledging, honoring, and working through what’s not.</image:caption>
