Grit in Psychology

In my doctoral program, I developed a specialty in positive psychology through both clinical training and research. A tenant of *positive psychology is grit, or the resilience/courage/strength to move forward despite innumerable obstacles. Like life’s many challenges, to achieve personal growth in therapy, it often takes bravery, courage, resilience, and a little bit of grit.

*Positive psychology can sometimes get a bad reputation for pushing optimism, unrealistic and inauthentic happiness, sunshine, rainbows, you get it. While these may be the more fun aspects of life, they certainly don’t capture the whole story, as suffering undeniably exists. In my practice, I use positive psychology to capitalize on what’s going well, while also acknowledging, honoring, and working through what’s not.
